Disabled woman claims discrimination
AUBURN ( AP) — A disabled Auburn woman has filed a complaint with the state Human Rights Commission claiming the Auburn Housing Authority wrongly denied her funding for a spare room she used for exercising.
Pamela Grant, who suffers from multiple physical and mental impairments, told the commission the housing authority declined her request for a two- bedroom Section 8 voucher.
Grant’s attorney sought from the authority a “reasonable accommodation” for Grant’s multiple medical conditions, but the authority denied her request. Grant claims the denial was a violation of the Maine Human Rights Act.
The Sun Journal reports that an investigator at MHRC concluded there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that the housing authority denied Grant reasonable accommodation and recommended “conciliation.”
The commission is scheduled to meet today to vote on the case.
