Driver crashes into historic building

STANDISH (AP) — Police say a man driving drunk while on probation crashed a stolen car into a historic building in Standish.

The Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office says Abraham Gammon, 39, was behind the wheel of a vehicle reported stolen from Cape Elizabeth earlier in the day when he lost control and struck the Marrett House at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The building sustained “substantial damage,” according to police, and the vehicle was totaled.

Gammon was injured and taken to Maine Medical Center.

He faces a variety of charges, including aggravated criminal mischief, operating under the influence, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
