Cdr. William Jackson Mims

BRUNSWICK — Cdr. William Jackson Mims, age 82 passed away March 28, 2012. He resided in Brunswick for 35 years.

William, known to all as "Bill", was born in Geneva County, Alabama on December 1, 1929. He was the son of Lantie Jackson Mims and Lou Inez Gamble Mims of Hartford, Alabama. His two sisters, Margaret Wiggins and husband, Kenneth, Carolyn Blakely and husband, James reside in Panama City, Florida. William is predeceased by Jean Furry Mims, his wife of 52 years, and daughter, Sandra Jean Fuhrey-Mims.

Survivors include daughter Katharine Inez Latimer; grandchildren, Tara Latimer Baumgartner and husband, Alex, Morgan Katharine Kremer and husband, Adam, Lindsay Hall Latimer, Joseph Marion Latimer, III, Liam Gregory Page and Gavin White. William graduated Geneva County High School, Hartford, Alabama May 28, 1948 with honors. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1948. He met and married a wave in the United States Navy, Jean Furry on March 21, 1953.

Commissioned as an officer in January, 1960, he had a long and distinguished career. Over the course of his career, Cdr. Mims was awarded three Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal with Star, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Cuba. He retired on October 31, 1978.

He was a member of the American Legion and regularly attended St. Charles Church. He enjoyed his retirement in Brunswick embracing his love of fishing, and taking several trips a year with his friends. He enjoyed coffee and lunches with his friends and was a competitive Domino player. He will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10AM Wednesday, April 4, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011 Arrangements are in care of the Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
