Museum Pieces in Lewiston

JOSH SHEA unloads a mounted caribou from the back of a truck on Lisbon Street in Lewiston on Tuesday. The caribou is one of seven animal mounts that were once part of the Smithsonian Institution’s collection and will be on display at Lewiston Auburn Magazine for the next six months. The Smithsonian donated the animals to Nokomis Regional High School taxidermy teacher Howard Whitten for educational purposes. Whitten’s students repaired the mounts and Whitten has loaned the animals to organizations for display ever since. Shea is the publisher of Lewiston Auburn Magazine.
