BRUNSWICK — Brunswick police continue to investigate the theft of tens of thousands of dollars from a fraternal organization in town.

Officers of the Knights of Pythias reported to police on Jan. 16 that they believed another officer from the organization had taken “tens of thousands of dollars” from an account, Brunswick Police Capt. Mark Waltz said Tuesday.

A 27-year-old Lewiston man who belonged to the group has been identified as a suspect, Waltz said, but he declined to name the man because formal charges have not yet been filed.

The man has been cooperative with police, however, and Waltz said he expects formal charges — likely Class B felony theft — to be filed in about a month.

Police believe the man stole the money between the summer of 2009 and the summer of 2011.
