Cancer support group hosts Marc-Aurel

The Times Record

James Marc-Aurel will be the featured speaker at Tuesday’s meeting of the Bath/ Brunswick Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room adjacent to the cafeteria at Mid Coast Hospital. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Marc-Aurel will give a presentation titled “Lymphedema: The Less Known Side Effect of Prostate Cancer Treatment.” He will define lymphedema symptoms, identify risk factors and how to manage them. He will address treatment options. Marc- Aurel, a certified lymphedema therapist, is supervisor of occupational therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation Services at Mid Coast Hospital.

“While most prostate cancer survivors are informed about potential side effects of treatment such as erectile dysfunction and/or incontinence, less is known about this additional side effect,” a release from the group states. “Some prostate cancer survivors experience swelling of the lower extremities caused by the pooling of lymphatic fluids. In addition to the discomfort this may cause, other risks include increased susceptibility to infections, issues related to wound care and other health concerns.”

In addition to Marc-Aurel’s talk, Tuesday’s meeting will provide time for questions and sharing.
