Tough night on the ice for area squads

Anna Chadwick and Julia Hinkley scored a third-period goal each as Winslow/Gardiner held on for a 5-2 girls high school ice hockey victory over Brunswick on Wednesday at Colby College.

The Dragons fell to 0-4 and visit Gorham/Bonny Eagle/Massabesic on Saturday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham at 6:20 p.m.

Sarah Stevens, Chadwick and Evelyn Hinkley scored in the opening frame for the Black Tigers (3-1), while Brunswick’s Emily Factor had a goal for the Dragons to make for a 3-1 contest.

Brunswick made it a one-goal game in the second frame as Shea Sullivan scored on the power play, assisted by Factor and Elena Palmer.

Hannah Wentworth had 32 saves in the Brunswick cage, while Winslow/Gardiner keeper Cassandra Demers turned away 18 shots.

Lydia Ginty had an assist for the Dragons.

The host Rangers tallied four goals in the opening period and never looked back for a win over Mt. Ararat/Morse, which fell to 0-4 and hosts two-time defending state champion St. Dom’s on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) at Bowdoin College’s Watson Arena.

Courtney Sullivan had a five-point game for Greely/Gray-New Gloucester (4-0) with two goals and three assists, while Nettie Cunningham picked up a hat trick.

Bridget Roberts and Madison Pelletier chipped in a pair of goals each.


The host Clippers allowed eight of the game’s first nine goals in falling to 0-4-1 on the season in a loss to Portland/ Deering at Travis Roy Arena in Yarmouth.

Emily Demers had three goals and an assist in the Portland/Deering (2-2) win, while Emma Merrill added a pair of goals and one helper. Olivia Howe had a goal and two assists.

Lilly Weinrich led Yarmouth/Freeport with two goals, with Sophie McGrath adding two helpers. Lydia Guay and Emma Moll also scored a goal each, with Lizzie Guertler, Sophie Newberg and Paige Caulfield picking up one assist apiece.

Allie Perrotta had 39 saves in the Clippers’ cage.

Yarmouth/Freeport visits Biddeford/Thornton Academy/ Wells on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) at Biddeford Ice Arena.
