Sea Dogs get sweep

The Portland Sea Dogs (56-58) received six scoreless innings from Dedgar Jimenez (W, 3-0) and defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels (49-66), 4-0, Thursday night at the Diamond in Eastern League action.

Portland has won four straight games and 12 of its last 17.

Portland scored all four runs in the third inning off losing pitcher Cory Taylor (4-9). Jeremy Barfield nailed a run-scoring double, giving Portland a 1-0 lead. Henry Urrutia drew a bases-loaded walk. Josh Tobias supplied a sacrifice fly and Danny Bethea (2- for-2, RBI, 2 BB) knocked in the fourth run with a single.

Taylor Grover worked 1 2/3 innings in relief of Jimenez, and Ty Buttrey retired all four batters to earn his third save of the year.

Jimenez tossed his first quality start in Portland, yielding six hits one walk and fanning five. Portland has nine shutouts on the road, and finished the season 5-1 against Richmond.

Danny Mars went 1-for-5, extending his season-high hitting streak to 12 games. However, Portland’s home run streak ended at 16 straight games.

The Sea Dogs head to Maryland to take on the Bowie Baysox for a threegame weekend series. The opener is tonight at 7:05 p.m.
